Privacy Policy
MoveMonkey (“the app”) is a sedentary reminder app for iPhone and Apple Watch. This policy explains what personal information the app processes, why and how it processes it, how long it keeps it, where it is processed, and how you can exercise your rights. Please read it carefully before you use the app.
1. Personal information handler
The app is developed and operated by An Donghao, an independent developer based in Singapore. Contact: movemonkey@billys.fun. The app needs no account.
2. Basic features and your choices
The app’s basic feature is to remind you to get up, based on the reminder hours and the Remind After time you set. Using the basic feature requires no personal information.
If you downloaded the app from the China mainland App Store, the first time you open it, it asks you to read this policy and choose whether to agree. Until you choose, the app requests no permissions and sends no information to the developer’s server.
- If you agree to this policy: The app sends its push token (a random code that Apple assigns to each installation of the app; it contains no name, Apple ID, or device information), reminder times, and related information to the developer’s server (see section 4), so that it can remind you on time even while it’s in the background.
- Stand and step data: After you agree to this policy, the app asks for your consent to this separately. If you don’t agree, reminders arrive at their scheduled times and aren’t postponed when you get up; Get Up only runs a timer, and when it ends, you answer whether you got up.
- If you don’t agree to this policy: You can still use the basic feature. Reminders arrive at their scheduled times, the app doesn’t read Health data, and it doesn’t connect to the server. Reminders are sometimes late, or arrive as usual after you’ve gotten up.
If you downloaded the app from the China mainland App Store, you can turn Stand and Step Data and On-Time Reminders on or off at any time: in the app’s Settings (the gear at the top left of its main screen), tap About. If you downloaded the app in another country or region, you can turn off its read access in the Health app, or delete the app to stop sending information to the server.
3. Personal information the app processes (list of personal information collected)
| Information | Source | Purpose | Where it’s processed | How long it’s kept |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stand minutes, stand hours, steps | Read from the Health app, with your permission | To tell whether you’ve been sitting too long, decide when to remind you, and count your stand hours | Only on your iPhone and Apple Watch | Not uploaded; the get-up records made from it are kept on your devices and deleted when you delete the app |
| Steps | Read from the motion sensors of your iPhone and Apple Watch, with your permission (Motion & Fitness) | To confirm Get Up, and to notice when you get up and walk around | Only on your devices | Same as above |
| Workouts | A workout that Apple Watch starts temporarily during Get Up, to read its sensors in real time | To confirm Get Up | Only on your devices | When Save as Workout is off, discarded as soon as Get Up ends; when it’s on, saved to the Health app as an Indoor Walk workout, which you manage in the Health app |
| Reminder settings and get-up records (reminder hours, Remind After time, daily stand goal, lunch break, get-up records) | Set by you in the app, or created by the app | To remind you to get up | On your devices, and synced between your iPhone and Apple Watch through Apple’s WatchConnectivity; iCloud isn’t used | Deleted when you delete the app |
| Push token | A random code that Apple assigns to each installation of the app; it contains no name, Apple ID, or device information. An Apple Watch paired with an iPhone also keeps that iPhone’s push token, so that at reminder time it can ask the server to wake the iPhone on its behalf | To wake the app at reminder time | The developer’s server (China mainland: Beijing; other countries and regions: Singapore; see section 4) | When you turn off On-Time Reminders, your iPhone and Apple Watch each ask the server to delete their records (if a device is offline, this happens the next time you open the app); deleted automatically when Apple reports that the token is no longer valid (for example, because the app was deleted), or after 30 days without any information from that device |
| The next reminder time, check time, and wake times (when your next reminder hours begin, and the first moment after that when a reminder could come; at most two) | Calculated on the device from your stand data, get-up records, and reminder settings. Each is a moment in time and contains no Health data such as steps or stand minutes, but it’s worked out from when you last got up | To wake the app on time; the check time is used to remind you to open the app again when it hasn’t run for a long time | Same as above | Deleted once the push is sent; reminder times and wake times are kept for at most 36 hours, the check time for at most 8 days |
| Whether the sender is the iPhone app or the Apple Watch app, the device’s current time, and the flag with which Apple Watch asks iPhone to take over reminders | Sent by the device | To calculate intervals accurately, and to choose which device to push to | Same as above | The device’s current time is used only for the calculation and isn’t kept; the rest is deleted along with that device’s records |
| The times of pushes sent in the last hour, and the last time information was received from the device | Recorded by the server | To limit the number of pushes, and to clear records that are no longer in use | Same as above | Push times are kept for 1 hour; the latter is deleted along with that device’s records |
| Server operating log: the time, the first 8 characters of the push token, iPhone app or Apple Watch app, the seconds until the next reminder time and check time, and Apple’s reply | Recorded by the server | Troubleshooting | Same as above | 30 days |
| IP address (error log) | Appears in the error log only when an error occurs on the server | Troubleshooting | Same as above | 14 days |
| Access log: the time, IP address, path, and result of each access (not including push tokens or what was sent) | Recorded by the Beijing server (only for the app downloaded from the China mainland App Store) | To keep network logs as required by the Cybersecurity Law of the People’s Republic of China and other laws and regulations, and to provide them when the relevant state authorities make a lawful inquiry; not used for any other purpose | Beijing, China | 6 months, then deleted automatically. The Singapore server keeps no access log |
When Apple Watch has been taken off your wrist and asks iPhone to take over reminders, but iPhone doesn’t respond, the server sends that iPhone a visible notification asking you to open the app. Apart from this, everything the server sends is an invisible background push; the app reads the data on your device and decides whether to remind you.
Sensitive personal information. Stand and step data is health and physiological information, and is sensitive personal information. Processing it is necessary because telling whether you’ve been sitting too long, and postponing a reminder after you get up, is the core purpose of the app. It’s processed only on your devices; it’s never uploaded, sold, or provided to anyone, and never used for advertising or marketing. If you don’t allow it to be read, you can still use the basic feature; reminders just aren’t postponed when you get up.
4. Where the server is located
- The app downloaded from the China mainland App Store: The server is in Beijing, China, hosted on the developer’s behalf by Alibaba Cloud Computing Co., Ltd. All of the information above is stored and processed within China. As required by law, this server keeps an access log for 6 months (see section 3).
- The app downloaded from the App Store in other countries or regions: The server is in Singapore, hosted on the developer’s behalf by Alibaba Cloud (Singapore) Private Limited.
- Apple Push Notification service: When a reminder time arrives, the server sends a push to your device through the Apple Push Notification service. To do this, the server gives Apple the push token; the push contains only the wake type (reminder, retry, check, wake, or take over) and the time it was sent, and no other personal information. The servers of the Apple Push Notification service may be located outside China, and Apple processes this information under its privacy policy.
All communication between your devices and the server is encrypted (HTTPS). If you downloaded the app from the China mainland App Store, you can turn off On-Time Reminders (in the app’s Settings, tap About), and the server’s records for this iPhone and Apple Watch are deleted. Users in any country or region can delete the app, or send an email to movemonkey@billys.fun.
5. Entrusted processing and third parties
Entrusted processing. The server is hosted by Alibaba Cloud (China mainland: Alibaba Cloud Computing Co., Ltd.; other countries and regions: Alibaba Cloud (Singapore) Private Limited). The developer has entrusted it with providing servers and storage, has agreed with it that it processes information only on the developer’s instructions, and supervises it.
List of personal information shared with third parties.
| Third party | Information shared | Purpose | Method | Contact |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Inc. (Apple Push Notification service) | The push token, and push content containing only the wake type and the time it was sent | To send pushes to your device | The server calls the Apple Push Notification service API | Apple privacy inquiries: apple.com/legal/privacy/contact |
The app contains no third-party SDKs and doesn’t sell personal information.
6. What the app doesn’t do
- It needs no account, and doesn’t collect your name, email address, or phone number.
- It doesn’t request location permission.
- It contains no advertising, analytics, or third-party tracking code, and doesn’t track you across other apps or websites.
7. Your rights
You have the right to know about, decide on, access, copy, correct, and delete your personal information, to withdraw your consent, and to ask for an explanation.
- Information on your devices: You can view and change your reminder settings in the app. Deleting the app deletes all of its data on your devices.
- Withdrawing consent to stand and step data: If you downloaded the app from the China mainland App Store, in the app’s Settings, tap About, then turn off Stand and Step Data. Users in any country or region can also open the Health app, tap Summary, then tap your profile picture or initials. Under Privacy, tap Apps, tap MoveMonkey, then turn off the relevant categories.
- Information on the server: If you downloaded the app from the China mainland App Store, turning off On-Time Reminders deletes it. After you delete the app, its records are deleted automatically within 30 days. Records on the server are identified only by push token and don’t correspond to any name or account, so the developer can’t look up a record by your name or email address; these are the direct ways to delete them.
- Other requests: Send an email to movemonkey@billys.fun, and the developer will reply within 15 business days.
- Withdrawing your consent doesn’t affect processing carried out on the basis of your consent before you withdrew it.
- If you believe your rights and interests in your personal information have been infringed, you can file a complaint or report with the cyberspace affairs authorities (such as the Cyberspace Administration of China) or another authority responsible for personal information protection.
8. Children
The app is rated 9+, but it isn’t designed specifically for children, and it doesn’t collect any additional information based on age. Children under 14 should use the app only after a parent or other guardian has read this policy and agreed to it; the guardian can withdraw consent at any time as described in section 7, or delete the app.
9. Information security
All communication between your devices and the server is encrypted. Only the developer can access the server, and it keeps only the information listed in section 3. If a security incident such as a personal information leak occurs, the developer will tell you through the app or on this page, and report it as required.
10. Diagnostics provided by Apple
If you choose to share analytics with app developers in your device’s settings, Apple may provide the developer with anonymous diagnostics for the app, such as crash reports. Apple processes this information under its own privacy policy. You can turn this off at any time: go to the Settings app, tap Privacy & Security, tap Analytics & Improvements, then turn off Share With App Developers.
11. Changes to this policy
If this policy is updated, the update is posted on this page and the effective date above is changed. If the purposes or methods of processing, or the types of personal information processed, change, the app asks for your consent again the next time you open it.
12. Contact
If you have any questions about this policy or your personal information, send an email to movemonkey@billys.fun.
